Visa Requirements

Australian Citizens do not need visas to visit or work in New Zealand.

Before travelling to New Zealand you need to apply for a visitors visa, unless you are a citizen of the following countries;

Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guam, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kiribati, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Nauru, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tuvalu, UK, USA, South Korea, Brunei, South Africa or Czech Republic.

A visitor's permit is normally issued for three months or 6 months for British Citizens on arrival. If you are a visitor and you wish to extend your stay, you should apply for an extension before your current permit expires. However, if you intend to stay longer than three months you should apply for a visitor's visa for the required length of time (up to 9 months) before you arrive in New Zealand.

Airport Departure Tax

The departure tax for passengers leaving New Zealand is $22. Passengers and children under 12 years staying less than 24 hours are exempt from paying the departure tax.

Duty Free Shopping

Visitors may buy duty free goods not subject to local taxes from duty free shops on arrival and departure.

Agricultural Restrictions

There are restrictions imposed on the importation of some animal and plant materials.

A declaration will need to be filled out before arrival in New Zealand.

Currency Exchange

You can exchange currency at any major bank in New Zealand.

Vaccinations

No vaccinations certificates are required to enter New Zealand.  If you should develop skin rash, fever or chills, diarrhea, vomiting or general illness, within three weeks then you should consult a doctor.

Medical & Emergency

The emergency number for fire, ambulance and police in New Zealand is 111. New Zealand's medical and hospital services are both public and private but are not free, except as a result of an accident.  Health Insurance is strongly recommended. For prescriptions and medication after normal shopping hours refer to the urgent pharmacies listing in the `Hospitals' section at the front of the phone directory.
